Help Wanted: Individuals Living Out Authentic Faith Needed

It’s late, so here’s a couple of quick thoughts.  I was recently challenged by a former church-goer as to the behavior of the vocal “Christians” and how even their fellow believers fear to do business with them because they are so untrustworthy and can actually be expected to operate in direct opposition to their stated beliefs.  I couldn’t argue…it certainly happens…often.  Is it in keeping with the person of Christ?  Absolutely not.  Is the validity of faith in him and a transforming relationship with him called into question?  Absolutely.  This is a tragedy in the church and one which, as believers, we should be challenging.  I pray for more churches that will call people to lives worthy of the high calling we’ve received in Jesus Christ.

Another sad application of the same issue can be seen in our failure to answer this dangerous school in Virginia.  Islamic students are being taught that it’s acceptable to kill ‘infidels’, yet the American church is so impotent that most Muslims in this land see nothing to attract them to Jesus and the God of the Bible.

If we fail to repent and remedy the current situation, then whether our downfall is ultimately brought about by secular humanism or Islam, the answer for our ineffectiveness in reaching our neighbor will be found in the same place: the mirror.

This is quite true about many Christian businesses not operating like they should. But their’s also another side to that. Many times people expect a Christian to be perfect (in their personal lives and in their business) which is impossible. And then, the first time a business makes a mistake the client (usually other Christians) run around telling the world how un-Christ like the business was.

I’ve spoken with other Christian business owners in the past and, it’s sad, but we all try to stay away from Christian clients because so many of them expect us to give them a discount or to do the work for free since their Christian.

Very good points. Thanks for commenting.

While my wife and I were living on a Christian campus, we noticed how many people routinely dishonored one another in little ways, such as cutting in line for dinner and seemed to feel no shame for their actions. It’s sad how we believe that other Christians should allow us to take advantage of them, just b/c we’re “brothers and sisters in Christ”, yet would be upset if someone treated us the same way.

I wonder how many of those Christian clients would like it if their employers said to them, “I know you’re a Christian and you have to turn the other cheek, forgive, etc., so we’re not going to pay you your normal salary this week. We’d like to pay you 70% of it and, even though it will hurt your budget, inhibit your family’s life, and reduce your ability to prepare for the future, you need to turn the other cheek and work just as hard for us as you do every week.”

It seems we’ve got a lot to learn in the body of Christ. I’m glad we still have a Teacher in the Holy Spirit and that He speaks to us through one another, the Word, as well as directly in our thoughts/hearts. Let’s keep encouraging one another toward humble obedience, in love.
